A bequest is a very special kind of gift. It enables you to support our work with a significant gift that might not have been possible during their lifetime. A bequest is an instruction you make in your Will to direct some or all of your estate as a gift to charity. You don’t have to be wealthy to make a bequest – whatever you choose to give will make a difference and help to enrich people’s lives.
If you need advice about how to make a Will or how to amend your existing Will to include a bequest, your solicitor will be able to help you. You can also obtain information and advice from The Public Trustee.
There are four types of bequests:
A specific sum
This is a gift of a specific sum of money or a specific asset that you may wish to donate.
When writing your will include this wording: "I give, devise and bequeath the sum of (the actual amount in words and figures should be written here) to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia Limited"
A portion or the whole of your estate
This is a gift of either your complete estate or a portion of your estate that you may wish to donate.
When writing your will include this wording: "I give, devise and bequeath the whole of my Estate (or, for example, sixty percent (60%) of my Estate) to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia Limited"
A remainder gift after specific bequests are written
This is the residue of what remains after all debts have been paid and all other gifts have been distributed. This has the advantage of not being affected by inflation or if your estate grows or is depleted, your family and friends will not be disadvantaged. The percentage of the residue may be any amount you choose, or it could even be 100%.
When writing your will include this wording: "I give, devise and bequeath the rest of my Estate (or, for example, sixty percent (60%) of the rest of my Estate) to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia Limited"
An alternative gift
You may wish to make a provision that if any named beneficiary cannot accpet your bequest, then Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia limited will benefit. You can also do this alongside the above gifts.
When writing your wil include this wording: "Should any beneficiary pre-decease me, or be unable or unwilling to accept the specified bequest, I give and bequeath that portion of my Estate to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia Limited"
