Introduction
The Master of Creative Music Therapy is a two-year, full-time course delivered by the University of Western Sydney in partnership with Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia. Much of the course is conducted from Australia’s only purpose-built facility, the Golden Stave Music Therapy Centre, on the Penrith Campus of the University of Western Sydney at Kingswood.
The course offers an intensive program of musical, therapeutic, and academic studies with an emphasis on clinical musicianship and supervised clinical work. With this practical, ‘hands on’ focus, students work at the Golden Stave Centre and external music therapy programs, under the professional supervision of registered music therapists.
The course guides students into developing a deep awareness and understanding of music and how to use it therapeutically through improvising, composing and arranging to meet the needs of individuals and groups.
You will gain an understanding of physical, mental, cognitive and emotional aspects of human behaviour along with the associated skills needed to work through the lifespan plus the spectrum of physical and psychological conditions including intellectual and physical disability, mental or physical illness, brain injury, terminal illness, the effects of abuse and stress.
You will also study the history and professional development of music therapy, including the various methodologies and theoretical constructs that form the basis of clinical work being carried out in more than 40 countries worldwide. The focus is on a deep, formal understanding of clinical and human issues that confront clinicians working in the community, as well as ethical and professional responsibilities.
Through the training you will develop an insight into your own psychological make-up, your own needs and areas of vulnerability. This helps you develop a deeper understanding of both yourself and your clients.
Graduates of the course have the skills, understanding and experience to enter professional practice with confidence.
